Elastoplastic models are typically written in the form of a rate-independent evolution which is characterised by the dissipation potential and the elastic energy. We will compare the continuum version of elasto-plasticity with a model for dislocation motion which also takes the form of a rate-independent evolution. For a suitable choice of the dissipation potential, we can show at least informally, that the dislocation evolution converges to an elasto-plastic evolution.
