Günes Taylor will explore financial security as an often-overlooked dimension of diversity in science and reflect on how financial circumstances can shape academic careers, opportunities, and personal choices.

"An academic career is a series of watershed transitions: undergraduate, master, PhD or postdoc. Reaching each new rung of the professional ladder is an achievement, but the next is never guaranteed. With every transition comes a new period of uncertainty and a new set of personal and financial risks. Yet the consequences of that uncertainty are not the same for everyone. Without family wealth or a financial safety net, there is far less room for things to go wrong."

Drawing on her own experience as a political refugee and a foreign scientist in the UK, Günes Taylor will explore how financial security intersects with gender, migration, and belonging in shaping a career in science. In particular, she will reflect on the cumulative impact of navigating academia without a financial buffer, from the career choices scientists make to the lives and families they hope to build.

Program:

  • 3:30 p.m. – Opening words
  • 3:40 – 4:30 p.m. – Diversity in Science Talk
  • 4:30 p.m. – Open Q&A session
  • 5:00 p.m. – Reception in the Foyer of the Raiffeisen Lecture Hall

Please note that on the following day, November 20, Dr. Taylor will also have a scientific seminar “Specification and Activation of Pregranulosa Cells within the Amniote Ovary“, at 10 a.m. in the Mondi 2 room (Central Building, O1)
